About Us

An Experienced Medical Professional

“Each patient receives individualized care, and their own treatment plan. The knee or hip replacement is planned specifically for you. Computer aided surgery is used when needed. Follow-up visits are planned to ensure the long term success of your joint replacement surgery. Since 1996 joint replacement surgery of the hip and knee, both first time and revision, are the only surgeries I perform. I have performed over 4000 joint replacements to date. Helping you relieve pain and improve function are my goals."

A Personal Approach

Our goal is to improve and maintain your quality of life and to empower you with an understanding of life after joint replacement surgery.

How We Help

Comprehensive Evaluation

A complete history and physical exam will be performed. Diagnostic studies, such as x-rays, will be necessary in determining the best treatment plan for each patient. Occasionally other studies, such as MRI or CT scan, are required.

Acute Symptoms

We offer evaluation and interim treatment options for pain due to acute arthritis symptoms. These can include physical therapy and cortisone injections.

About Joint Replacment

All knee and hip replacement surgeries are performed at Sutter Medical Center Sacramento. A hospital stay of 1-3 nights is typical after joint replacement surgery.

Dr. Blumenfeld is board-certified and fellowship trained in Adult Reconstructive Orthopedic Surgery. He graduated from Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston and has been in practice for over 25 years. Dr. Blumenfeld has a reputation of being one of the most experienced joint replacement surgeons in the Sacramento Area. See his complete CV in the documents section below.

What is your success rate?

You are in trusted and experienced hands at our office. We have an infection rate and dislocation rate that is less than 1%. In 24 years Dr. Blumenfeld has performed over 4,000 knee and hip replacements and revisions. During that time only 5 patients developed early infections that required antibiotics and he has revised only 3 of his original knees for component loosening.

What are the risks and benefits of joint replacement surgery?

Hip and knee conditions can cause significant pain and limitations in mobility, activities of daily living and decrease overall quality of life. Our goal is to relieve your pain, improve your mobility and return you the lifestyle you desire.

Risks associated with joint replacement surgery include:

-  Bleeding

- Infection

- Fractures

- Blood clots

- Ongoing pain or stiffness

We make all efforts to minimize complications and adverse outcomes for our patients.

Do you use computer assisted technology?

Yes, computer navigation is used on a select basis.

Do you handle complex cases?

Dr. Blumenfeld not only handles complex surgeries of the hip and knee, he is also experienced in complex revision surgeries.

What is the expected time frame for recovery?

Patients are walking the same day as surgery. Assistive devices, such as a walker or cane, are typically used for 4-6 weeks after surgery. Most patients are back to the majority of their activities at 3 months with complete recovery occurring between 6 months and 1 year. At our office you will be followed throughout the entire recovery period. Post-operative follow-ups occur at 6 weeks, 12 weeks, and 1 year with clinical and x-ray evaluation. Complex and revision cases are also seen at 6 months. After initial recovery patients are encouraged to be seen every two years for preventative evaluation.
