“Each patient receives individualized care, and their own treatment plan. The knee or hip replacement is planned specifically for you. Computer aided surgery is used when needed. Follow-up visits are planned to ensure the long term success of your joint replacement surgery. Since 1996 joint replacement surgery of the hip and knee, both first time and revision, are the only surgeries I perform. I have performed over 4000 joint replacements to date. Helping you relieve pain and improve function are my goals."
- Dr. Blumenfeld, orthopedic surgeon
Our qualified medical team includes Thomas Blumenfeld, MD, Brooke Garcia, PA-C, Mary Pat Flynn, RN, and Brenda Huesca, office assistant. Each member assists with all aspects of care from the initial consult to post-operative phase.
Our goal is to improve and maintain your quality of life and to empower you with an understanding of life after joint replacement surgery.
A complete history and physical exam will be performed. Diagnostic studies, such as x-rays, will be necessary in determining the best treatment plan for each patient. Occasionally other studies, such as MRI or CT scan, are required.
We offer evaluation and interim treatment options for pain due to acute arthritis symptoms. These can include physical therapy and cortisone injections.
All knee and hip replacement surgeries are performed at Sutter Medical Center Sacramento. A hospital stay of 1-3 nights is typical after joint replacement surgery.

Risks associated with joint replacement surgery include:

Dr. Blumenfeld not only handles complex surgeries of the hip and knee, he is also experienced in complex revision surgeries.
Patients are walking the same day as surgery. Assistive devices, such as a walker or cane, are typically used for 4-6 weeks after surgery. Most patients are back to the majority of their activities at 3 months with complete recovery occurring between 6 months and 1 year. At our office you will be followed throughout the entire recovery period. Post-operative follow-ups occur at 6 weeks, 12 weeks, and 1 year with clinical and x-ray evaluation. Complex and revision cases are also seen at 6 months. After initial recovery patients are encouraged to be seen every two years for preventative evaluation.
Here you will find helpful educational documents and well as new patient paperwork and post-operative exercises.
